hayle

Dominating the crescent of st ives bay is hayle with its three miles of golden sands stretching to godrevy lighthouse. This is a popular location for self-catering beach accommodation with many of the facilities only a short walk from the beach. the "towans", cornish for sand dunes form an impressive backdrop to the vista of sand.

Landspeed sailing is a fast growing attraction here due to the expanse of sand available, with british and european rounds of the world championships being held here in the past. During spring and autumn, these championship events make use of the beach as a perfect venue and draw competitors from around the world. These great beaches offer scope for everyone and lifeguards patrol during the summer months. godrevy lighthouse, no longer manned, stands on a small island off-shore. This is reputed to be the lighthouse on which virginia woolf based her novel "to the lighthouse".

two man-made pools are a feature. The biggest of these is the tidal copperhouse pool, designed to sluice the sand bar at the entrance to the harbour. It is still used for the annual swimming races and model boat sailing regattas.

Split into two distinctive parts - foundry and copperhouse - these names highlight the industrial heritage of the town. Originally two centres which grew up around the foundries of harvey & co and the cornish copper company, the town grew in importance to become a major industrial complex in its heyday.

Rivalry between the two companies spanned almost 30 years. As the reputations of the companies spread, commissions were received for pipes and pumps for the mines in cornwall and beyond, and then for steam engines. Indeed, the newly restored levant mine at pendeen has a fine example of one of harvey's engines.

Today hayle is a shopping and tourist centre with attractions for the family including the internationally important bird sanctuary of paradise park as well as golf and pitch and putt facilities, fun bikes, open air swimming pool and amusement parks.

hayle estuary

Hayle's estuary is host to tens of thousands of winged visitors - some of them rare ones indeed, and the man-made carnew pool, the estuary itself and Lelant Saltings are prime bird watching venues.

Proud of their heritage the towns people stage a Hayle heritage festival week in August. This celebration includes sports events, musical events and displays.
