Bed and Breakfast Accommodation, Lostwithiel, Cornwall | Hartswell Farm

General Information

Relax and unwind in our old unspoilt Cornish Farmhouse (circa 17th Century) nestling in the shelter of a beautiful hillside with outstanding country views, in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). Open all year.

A warm, friendly welcome awaits you with full English breakfast in ample portions and our own fresh eggs.

Hartswell is an ideal place to relax in peace and quiet and yet still be within easy reach of the many attractions and beaches of Cornwall. Join us for a river trip when staying for 4 days or more.

Take time to potter around the 52 acre farm and farm trail. There are ducks and many wild pheasants. We are a small working farm producing beef for market, vegetables and eggs for ourselves. We have a herd of RARE BREED Red Poll cows and calves.

Ideally placed for BIRD-WATCHING, not only around the farm where swifts and swallows nest, and barn owls are seen, but also within 5 miles there are sea, woodland, marsh and moorland species.

Our farm is steeped in history, having witnessed not only stone-age man, but also later formed the battleground for a major CIVIL WAR conflict hereabouts. The name "Hartswell" reflects a past when the nearby stately home of BOCONNOC (House and Gardens open in Spring) owned the farm as a watering place for its deer herd.

Just off the main A390, Hartswell makes a good touring centre but it is well away from traffic and nights are quiet. Explore our local town of Lostwithiel (1 mile), once Cornwall's capital. Here are many ancient buildings, recommended restaurants, craft and antique shops, a Tudor bridge, museum and the nearby Black Prince's RESTORMEL castle.

Hire a boat and tackle for a day's Trout and Salmon fishing along the beautiful river Fowey with its spectacular woods where Kenneth Grahame wrote " Wind in the Willows" and the "Poldark" TV series was filmed - a must for all twitchers!

Within 5 miles are south coast beaches, Fowey and the Eden Project. Looe and Polperro - famous smugglers' haunts, are 12 miles away. Daphne du Maurier's "Jamaica Inn" is not far away as are horse riding, squash, indoor tennis and swimming. Five minutes drive will take golfers to an 18 hole Golf and Country Club. The famous National Trust property, LANHYDROCK House is only 3 miles away, and within a 10 mile radius are enough places of beauty and interest to occupy you for a whole week.

Open all year.
